Summary
Now that John was back to work, he thought everything would be fine. Sure, everyone knew he had been sneaking around the hospital and taking whatever drug he could get his hands on before disappearing into rehab. And yes, his coworkers (his friends?) spoke to him like he was still in the middle of an active addiction, their voices softer and touches gentler than they ever were before. And of course, his family has all but forgotten that he existed, his "extracurricular activities," as his father so kindly put it, not fitting in with their perfect, prestigious image (because god forbid they support their only remaining son). But still, he thought it would be fine. He thought he would be able to ignore everything and fall back into the routine of the ER like he never left in the first place.

Summary
John was a few feet away from the admit desk, the voice getting louder with every step he took, when he saw him. Jerry was nodding his head lazily at a man who was talking, talking, talking. His voice, the one John recognized, grew more agitated with every second until he was bordering on yelling. But all John could focus on was his face. He knew that face.
A suffocating feeling of dread bloomed in his stomach and spread up to his throat until he felt like he couldn't breathe. A wave of nausea threatened to drown him as he took a step back in an attempt to get away from that face. That voice. But, to the surprise of no one, he backed right into Deb and knocked the tray she was holding out of her hands. Metal hit the ground with a loud clanging that caught the attention of everyone within twenty feet, including that voice.

Summary
Growing up John didn't have many friends. There were a few reasons, he supposed. Some relationships were forced by his parents in order to make some financially beneficial partnership. Others fell apart after Bobby died and John's mother basically ignored his existed, her heartbreak too severe to care for her other son. Friendships he made later in life either ended because John's desperation to be accepted and pleasing to people scared them off or they found out about his family's fortune and tried to get a few (hundred, in some cases) dollars from him. As a favor, they said, but John knew that once people found out about his family's wealth, he was nothing more than a bank to them.

Summary
Peter went a whole month without seeing John Carter, the severely accident prone 23-year-old who liked to talk to anyone he could. When Peter removed his sutures a month ago, the guy chatted away to him, the nurses, and the patient on the bed next to him. He constantly had something to say, and it drove Peter crazy. But a month had passed, and Peter almost forgot about his head lac (and black eye) patient until Lydia was handing him a chart.
"Chatty kid is back with a hand laceration in need of sutures." Peter opened the chart to see 'John Carter' and he sighed. He thought about handing the case off to Brown (who had not improved in the last month) but decided against it. Peter needed to practice his sutures anyway.

Summary
"I've been with the Carter family since before little John was born. I know this family. They really aren't a bad bunch, but yes, his father has hurt him before. It started when John was quite young. About ten years old, I'd guess."
"You've known that Carter was getting abused for 14 years and didn't tell anyone?!"
"Oh, abuse is such a callous word!" The woman yelled, her voice angry beneath the sadness. There was a bit of shame clouding her expression, but she covered it with the need to deny deny deny. "And you mustn't tell anyone. You will ruin Mr. Carter's name if you do. Ask John, he'll tell you the same thing."

Summary
That night, John went to bed as normal. After his shift, he clumsily made his way through dinner and a shower before falling into his bed with a groan. All he wanted to do was sleep.
But not even two hours later, John was blinking himself awake as a cloud of confusion enveloped his brain. He glanced around the room with blurry eyes still brimming with sleep, blinking away the last elements of his dream that left him with the same feeling of dread he had the previous night. It simmered beneath his skin just enough to be present and noticeable, but not enough for him to actually remember why he was feeling it. He thought he remembered seeing his parents and, perhaps, a patient from earlier in the day running around his dream. He couldn't figure out why or what, but the who sat blurred behind his eyes.
Shaking off the feeling in his half-awake daze, John just rolled over and fell asleep almost instantly.
