The whole time, Shane felt like he wouldn’t be too far behind Hayden. Their lives were so intertwined and on such similar paths. But that was five years ago, and here Shane was. Alone on New Years Eve at 9pm in a quiet office reading a trial transcript from a potential referral.
He wasn’t sure what he had imagined his thirties would look like when he was younger. That was a lie. He did know. The image in his head was, and still is the same. A kiss goodbye in the morning, a small hug after work and while flipping pancakes, a stubbled cheek against his chest at night, small laughs before bed… The image is a blur of quiet moments interlocked with another.
Shane didn’t know yet, but a last minute decision made in a moment of his deepest loneliness would move him closer to the life he had quietly resigned himself to never having.

Summary
Todd Roy is an overworked lawyer and exhausted new dad, but when his long-time friend and colleague Shane Hollander invites him to his small birthday get-together, Todd feels obligated to attend. What he thinks is just a couple of drinks with friends turns out to be the weirdest fucking couple of drinks he has ever had when not one, but two NHL players show up and one keeps giving his friend, Shane, literal heart eyes.
"It would be worth it though, just to celebrate Shane’s birthday. He and Hayden had gone through a lot last year. Despite this, Shane literally saved Todd’s ass on multiple occasions over the last twelve months while Todd struggled to juggle a still fairly new relationship, a new baby, and moving to a bigger house. From writing a brief for Todd, that Shane should have charged double for, to appearing for Todd in court when Hope was in the NICU, Shane had repeatedly shown up for Todd. Todd could show up for him for just a couple of hours and buy his friend at least one fucking beer. Hey, maybe Jackie would even be there."
