Summary
The contract referred to it as ‘contact and ongoing surveillance of a person of interest’—Langley-speak for ‘get in her good books and stick close in case she says anything important’.
Or: Dex takes a contract to keep tabs on a counterintelligence operative working for the other side and catches feelings he knows he shouldn't.

Summary
“You have a visitor, convict.” There weren’t many people it could be, and of those he was only interested in seeing her, if she even counted among the people who would want to see him.
If he had ever done anything good in his life, let this be the moment the universe repaid it. Let it be her.And then she stepped in front of the glass and the room became ten times brighter. She was holding a plate of what looked like pale clumps of dirt on a paper plate. She produced a candle from her blazer pocket and stuck it into the centre of the plate.
“Happy birthday, baby.”

Summary
She walked straight across the pitch, hands out of her pockets and hanging passively at her sides. Relaxed, unbothered, but purposeful. He didn’t move except to square his shoulders at her approach, like an animal trying to make itself look larger in the face of a threat.
She stopped at the pitcher’s mound, close enough to speak without raising her voice, but still out of reach. He stayed seated on the dugout bench.
He tilted his face towards her. “Hello, special agent.”
“Hi, baby.”Series

Summary
He had felt starved in her presence, and yet satiated in a way that nothing else had ever made him. Now, he realized it had all been a delusion. This morning he had woken up feeling like a man who had been full for the first time in his life, and finally understood the meaning of hunger. No more walls, no more waiting for an inevitable end, no more holding her and wondering when the touch would be forced to turn violent.
The honeymoon phase, he had heard it called, two years later than it should have been.Series

Summary
She let her head fall back against the tile wall. Her hair was sticking to her face in wet strands that his hand itched to bush away. “I don’t know if this is working.”
“What do you mean?” The water was suddenly too cold, and his wet clothes clung too tightly, and his heart was beating too fast under his ribs. He knew he’d said the wrong thing, but what if it was *the* wrong thing? The straw that broke the camel’s back. People said near-death experiences put things into perspective, prompted major life changes. He wondered how many couples split up after FBI raids. He wondered when he started thinking of them as a couple.

Summary
They had argued before—it was natural for couples to disagree once in a while, or so he had heard—but they never had much bite to them. This was different. Unplanned, with no simple fix. There was no rehearsed script for him to fall back on, no scaffolding to keep himself on track.
It was uncharted territory and he fucking hated it.Series

Summary
“For this next trick, Bullseye needs an assistant!”
She stepped up to the wooden board that would serve as the target for the next act. There were four sets of leather straps fastened to it, and she arranged her wrists and ankles to line up with each set. Dex was at her side in an instant, his body eclipsing hers while he tightened the straps around her.
“This okay?” He asked, like they hadn’t already done this half a dozen times this month.
“Yes.” She said, even as her hands flexed against the slight tremor running through them. No matter how good Dex was, no matter that Bullseye never missed, there was some visceral part of her that always expected the knife to meet flesh.
“You can’t flinch.” Dex had once told her, back when they had first begun rehearsing the new act. “Flinching throws off my aim.” She flinched anyways. Dex learned to work around it.
