Summary
“You think this isn’t stressful for me? For Ma? For your race engineer?” Verin steps close and taps the middle of Essek’s forehead twice. “It’s time you start using that brain of yours off the track too. I’m not saying you can’t be selfish, but you should be aware of how your actions ripple over others.”
Verin and Essek have a brief conversation away from the hubbub of the gala.

Summary
“So the attending thing…” Beauregard clips her pager back onto the waistband of her scrub bottoms, satisfied that all is good. “Someone should at least try it and give us notes for the intern exam.”
Fjord tilts his head like he’s actually considering being the sacrificial lamb. “An experiment of sorts.”
“Yeah!” Jester leans in, excitement filling her eyes. “Scientific method! We’ll rock paper scissors to choose who.”
Caleb doesn’t put his hand into the pile. Just continues to look over Fjord’s shoulder at the attending and tells the group, “Don’t bother. I’ll volunteer myself.”
Or, Widogast's guide to screwing your way into the operating room.

Summary
“It is a fairly big event,” Essek warns, sensing his uncertainty. “There will be many people that even I don’t know. You’re welcome to stick by me for the majority of it and I’ll try to leave as soon as is acceptable.”
“Will any team principles be in attendance?” The thought of his old mentor sitting content at a charity event is laughable, but not so far out of the realm of possibility if it helps the vile man pull strings to get what he wants. Caleb’s stomach turns and he hopes he doesn’t appear as sick as he feels.
“It’s always a possibility.” Essek shrugs. He tilts his head a few degrees and Caleb can’t help but think Essek knows more than he lets on. “Who are you hiding from?”
Essek invites Caleb to a formal event that used to be held by his father.

“Mm. Alright, go ahead and get it over with.” Essek sighs, flipping over so he’s on his back and staring at the ceiling.
“Get what over with?”
“It’s a race engineer’s job to lecture their drivers on poor performance.”
The Ank'harel Grand Prix is underway and Essek starts the race from an undesirable position.

Summary
Essek Thelyss is back on the grid after a few years away from racing. Despite his record five championship wins, he can't seem to get past P10 in the Driver's Standings, no matter how hard he tries. All signs point to his incompetent pit crew and maybe a little towards the poor excuse of a race engineer. Determining the lack of leadership for his crew is to blame, he searches for a new chief mechanic to help him get a podium, and eventually a championship trophy.
Caleb Widogast does not use the name his parents knew him by. On the run from his past, he finds a place to settle down as a mechanic at Brenatto's Garage. Despite wanting to put distance between himself and racing, he can't help but work on the pet project he keeps in the back of the garage: a refurbished F1 car. When a disgraced F1 driver visits the garage in the middle of the F1 summer break, Caleb's past collides with his present in an unprecedented way.
