October 2022. Mountain very much looks forward to spending his rut in peace this year, up in his secret cabin in the woods. Earth heats and ruts are intense, they can get savage, violent even, and Ghost’s gentle giant of a drummer would prefer it if his bandmates didn’t see him like this. Of course, because things can’t go smoothly when you’re in a band with Dewdrop, the fire ghoul is right there to ruin his plans of calm and quiet. He’s too curious about the earth ghoul’s reputation, because there’s no way their ruts are that bad, right? He pokes the proverbial bear, and gets more than expected in return. Like, way more. Maybe more than he can handle, in fact. And he loves every second of it.

This is why he is endlessly frustrated by Viktor - strong, independent, just-as-stubborn Viktor - who refuses his help every step of the way. What starts as a regular argument spirals into something more that neither of them are entirely sure what to make of.

Summary
Black Hat wiles away his time in a prison until he finally grows bored of it after many long years. On the day that Black Hat decides to leave and be on his way, a hero foils his escape attempt. A hero who happens to be the same species as Black Hat. Suddenly, escape wasn’t nearly as interesting to Black Hat compared to seeing just how far he could push White Hat.
Black Hat soon resumes his attempts to escape the prison, each time becoming more and more outlandish, just to see how long it takes to break the goody-two-shoes hero. It had been such a long time since Black Hat had bothered to put in any effort while pursing someone. But a morally uncorrupt White Hat who was terrible at hiding his interest and feelings? The hero was much more fun for Black Hat to try to sink his claws into than he initially thought, as White Hat’s reactions to his advances were quite entertaining.

But he is running, running, he is heading toward the end of the bridge, toward the slope leading to the edge of the aqueduct, he is ignoring the screaming ache of his exhausted limbs and the faraway shouts of his comrades as he sprints across raw concrete and then across frost-laden weeds, across bitter soil.
What am I doing?
He isn’t quite sure, not yet, but he knows that the Panzer fell into the middle of the aqueduct, and that water at temperatures below freezing can induce shock within twenty seconds or less, and if he is too late...
(Or, the version of events where, instead of leaving Klaus to his death, Nikolay saves him and in doing so triggers a chain of circumstances that neither of them could ever have predicted.)
