Summary
At first, he’s not really sure why he does it. Kids pick on other kids all the time and it’s never bothered Bucky before.
Maybe it’s because the kid’s so small. He’d probably come up to Bucky’s chest if they were standing side by side, and all the kids wailing on him are as big as Bucky. There are three boys and they’re tossing punches and jeers, telling the kid he should mind his own business and stop trying to protect people when he can’t even protect himself. There’s something noble in that, Bucky knows it.
Maybe it’s because the stupid punk just won’t stay down. He gets pushed to the ground three times before Bucky finally jumps in to end the fight. Every time it looks a little bit harder, but the kid drags himself to his feet and gets into a wobbly, pathetic, fighting stance.
Later, much later, Bucky wonders if the real reason he stopped that day was because he could tell, even from a distance, that the scrawny kid with milk white skin and hair flashing gold in the sun was just about the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.
A story of growing up, falling in love, and quietly pining... that is, until Bucky comes home to find that Steve's picked a new apartment with only one bed.

He opened his mouth, ready to say something nasty, when he saw it. The deep purple standing out clear as day against the pallor of Steve's skin, unmistakable. Right at the base of his throat, a large hickey. Bucky's eyes zeroed in on it immediately as his collar shifted, revealing the mark. Grabbing Steve's chin, he pushed his head up and away, giving himself a better look at the love bite right above his collar bone."What the fuck, Steve?" Bucky frowned, letting him go and stepping back from him. "So that's what you were caught up with? Some fucking dame kept you? You know if you wanted to go chase skirts, you could have told me. Hell, you know I'd go with you."
"I—" Steve looked slightly panicked for a second before he shrugged, "I didn't go out to chase skirts," he stated evasively.

"Hey, come here," Steve says, pulling Bucky close enough to wrap his arms around his waist. Bucky sinks into him, forehead resting on the crown of Steve's head. "How can I help?"
He's not even thinking about it at first, about the way he helped before, but then Bucky breathes warm and heavy in Steve's hair and suddenly it's all he's thinking about—those little gasps Bucky had let out, and the way his skin had flushed pink while Steve brought him off.
Bucky's arms get a little tighter around him now, like maybe he's remembering too. And he must be, because then he says, "Could you… Stevie, would you mind? Like before?"

When Bucky needs him, Steve will be there. In any city, in any century, in every way that Bucky will have him.
