A pyre stood in the courtyard. Damian stared at his mothers boots, not allowed eye contact yet. They were brown, but they were dark green, and he knew he’d smell burnt flesh that night—skin that blackened to match the dark tones of the League uniforms and echoed his mother’s grey-brown (green?) eyes. He hoped someday it wouldn’t be his own.
He was four years old, but the taste of smoke would never leave his mouth.
Damian is colorblind. Somehow, Stephanie figures it out before the rest do.
