Summary
Fate would imply that their existence and Crowley’s Fall were all part of the Divine Plan, and if they were to believe in a benevolent god who loved them, Crowley simply could not believe that She would have let her angels fall. Therefore Crowley did not believe in Fate. He believed in Free Will, and his own right to reclaim the Fall on his own terms. That he’d wanted to go. That he’d rather suffer in a pit than stay in Heaven.
Unless, and Crowley had only entertained this thought once, and got so engrossed in it, he’d tripped into a river and never thought about it again, unless Fate and the Divine Plan were separate. Unless there were other forces in the universe outside of God.
And that felt a little bit too much like blasphemy, even for a demon, since said demon had previously been an angel, and had beheld the Almighty on more than one occasion.
...or rather, In Which: Aziraphale sets a "no blasphemy in the bookshop" rule and Crowley stumbles out in the rain...

Summary
After breaking up with his partner a few days before Christmas, Yale professor Aziraphale Eastgate decides to go back to England to keep a promise he made to his mother before she died.

Aziraphale knows he’s a solitary person. He knows Crowley may very well be his only true friend. He doesn’t mind this. He does, however, very much mind learning that his coworkers have a betting pool on whether he’ll be coming alone to the department holiday party next week. He especially minds when he learns that the reason there is a betting pool in the first place is because their intern, young Newton Pulsifer, is the only one naïve enough to believe Aziraphale might have a date.

In retaliation to a bet made against him, Aziraphale asks Crowley to be his date to the office holiday party. Certainly there are no flaws to be found in this plan. Certainly the secret love Aziraphale has been harboring for Crowley for the past several years won't be an issue. Certainly not.
