If he says it enough times, goes through every step and motion like a check list, he'll even believe it too. It's all in the motions. Smile, wave, be congenial. Placate and accommodate. Be polite. Everyone is the same. Everyone, except the grumpy neighbor one floor down and one apartment over. Jayce has yet to tell him that they were that close of neighbors. But he can not for the life of him get the first instance out of his head. It was so unexpected, it caught him off guard and he's been riding that high ever since. It had stopped the creeping intrusive thoughts in their tracks and blew them to dust.

It’s a young man, absolutely filthy, his face caked with blood and his clothes torn in places that turn Jayce’s stomach. He blinks back from the light that floods in, and before he can react any further Jayce is on his knees, reaching for the cable ties around his wrists, saying, “It’s okay, you’re safe now, I’ve got you-”
“Jayce?”
And Jayce, hand halfway to the pocket knife on his belt, freezes. Takes another look at the man. And whispers, “Viktor?”
Jayce is a crisis interventionist for the Piltover Police Department. One night, while defusing a hostage situation, he discovers one of the hostages is someone he knows.
