    Whatever happened here was bad. Irrevocably, inexplicably, inarticulably bad in a way that the most basal parts of his being wants nothing more than to escape from. But Grace can't turn away.

    After encountering what appears to be a last hoo-ra emergency mission attempt from Earth caught up in the Hail Mary's wake, Grace and Rocky discover a single, severely injured human being quite literally encased in what Grace can only describe as a crime scene. A horror movie. And when he wakes up? He's mad. Really mad. Talking to the walls mad. Now they have to figure out just where he came from and why. Things are further complicated when all the newcomer (Simon, they learn) can talk about is missing planets, haunted oceans, and non-existent space stations. That and the really weird data they've been picking up on.
    Maybe part of solving that is, much to Rocky's enthusiasm; both Grace and Simon slowly realizing how lonely they are.

    After ramming the sub straight into the Light, Simon wakes up on a strange spaceship with no memory of how he got there. The state of the Hail Mary -spacious, clean, bright and comfortable- can only lead to one conclusion: Simon has somehow been picked up by one of the highest-ranking leaders of the C.O.I.

    Luckily, Dr. Grace doesn't seem to recognize him, buying Simon enough time to hatch yet another desperate plan for survival before his identity is discovered. In the meantime, Simon tries his best to stay in the man's good graces (no pun intended), but he's hardly known for his charming personality.

    Both of them are in for a bumpy ride.

    Waited for them to apologize. Tell him there’s nothing they could do. That he wasn’t worth the trouble or resources, that he wasn’t worth the time.

    But that never came.

    Instead, after a second Grace came back on the line, his voice sounding determined now. “Alright,” he said. “Hang tight.”

    Simon blinked slowly. “What?”

    Ryland Grace figured out he was on a suicide mission and also remembered who he was. Exactly in that order.
    And between trying to save his planet and getting to know his new alien friend, Ryland thought he was kind of on the threshold for crazy stuff happening in his life. But of course the universe has to prove him wrong by sending him an impossible transmission, light years away from the nearest civilization.

     

    Or: Grace picks up Simon like a feral cat and drags him along as he saves his planet. Rocky is not happy about this.

    Simon died. Eaten and consumed by the Blood Eel. Not until he wakes up in a place called Erid where sentient rocks live and a guy who can’t seem to wear his glasses the right way.

    OR

    Simon gets thrown into Project Hail Mary because he deserves to be taken care of after the ending in Iron Lung. (basically, in other words. Simon and Grace act stupid, made everyone in Erid their spectators of their stupidity)
