Summary
A few months after Rory left to work on the Barack Obama campaign, she receives a phone call from her mother. Lorelei is finally getting married. Rory could not be happier for her, but going back to Stars Hollow for the wedding also means facing Jess for the first time since she went to his open house in Philadelphia. They never cleared the air after this and Rory does not know where she stands with him anymore.

In so many ways, it feels like she’s been Jess Mariano’s since the moment she laid eyes on him five years ago. Paris was right. She’s gone full-blown Felicity over here. He catches her staring. “You okay over there? The room feels uncharacteristically silent.” Jess tosses her a smirk that’s so damn appealing it makes her a little mad. Does he have to be so abnormally beautiful?
“I’m fine. Just thinking,” she grins.
“About…” Jess stretches out the word and gestures with his hand, prompting her forward.
“Nothing in particular,” she hums, which is a lie because she’s mostly thinking that she wants to love him forever.

“You can’t stay there tonight.”
“Ugh, okay. Any recommendations? Keep in mind I’m down to my last penny so nothing fancy.”
“Fancy?”
“If they have steady, non-flickering lights, pillow mints and those nifty little do not disturb signs on the knobs, it’s probably too fancy for my budget.”
Jess huffs a laugh of disbelief, chugs the last of his drink and presses his lips together like he’s thinking for a second before he says, “stay with me.”
Occurs sometime between 2008-2010, Rory goes back to Jess after the Obama election

“You want me to freak out?”
“Well I don’t want to keep freaking out by myself.” At some point they started holding hands between them, so Rory starts playing with his fingers to distract herself, “you’re making me feel like I’m the only one affected.”
“You’re not, Rory. Not even close. Look,” He tugs lightly at her hand and places it right on his chest, over his heart. It’s thumping, strong and hard and he draws in closer, “and when we do this?” Jess kisses her again, and she feels his heart rate skip then race, going unsteady under her palm.
“Oh.” Rory replies dumbly, licking her lips. She closes her hand, grasping at his shirt, “point well made, Sir.”
“There’s never been a time you didn’t effect me.”
“That’s a good line. You should write it into your next book.”

Summary
“You want to go run after Jess. Don’t you.”
“I need this, mom. I need to do this, I need the closure.” Just saying the words has a weight lifting from her chest and Rory feels the floodgates opening, tears flowing freely down her cheeks that she’s been holding on to since that day.
“I-I haven’t felt like this before, there’s just so much missing and I can’t be happy, I can’t even be sad, I’m just stuck in this limbo until I know that he’s okay, that he’s not hurt or alone or sleeping under a bridge. That he’s being fed, that he’s warm, that he’s okay. And I know I shouldn’t care, not when he left the way he did and treated me the way he did but it’s like— no matter how much I tell myself to move on, I can’t. I just— can’t. I need to see him, speak to him, even if it’s the last time.”
Or— Rory goes to find Jess after he flees to California.
