It all began with a game. You didn't know it at the time, but choosing to play the game alone was going to be the worst decision of your life. And quite possibly the worst decision ever made by anyone on your version of Earth.
After your planet entered your session through the black hole, you ended up in the same universe as another "dead" session like your own. Except the other session was being played by someone who actually had the potential to win. Despite you having little hope of even getting to the point where you could unlock your denizen, you were a threat. If you had reached the opportunity to be given The Choice, you would have ruined everything for this other player. And that's why Gamzee couldn't allow you even the smallest possibility to succeed.

You hadn’t even been scheduled to work that day.
A coworker had called in sick, and as one of the very few people capable of using the relevant instruments needed for that day’s experiments, you had the misfortune of being first in line for coverage.
The anomalous event had been routine at first. There were a few readings that were out of range, but it wasn’t enough to cause anyone present to be concerned. You were doing your thing, taking measurements along the edges of the space in question and being careful to avoid the nexus of the event.
Apparently, all of your caution was ultimately insufficient.
