The first thing Yoo Mia noticed about the ocean was that it sounded lonely.
That probably wasn't the normal reaction people had when they saw a beach for the first time. Most people probably noticed the water itself. Or the sky. Or the way the sunlight reflected across the waves until the entire horizon seemed to glitter. Yoo Mia noticed those things too, eventually. But the sound came first.
The ocean never stopped moving.
Even when a wave broke against the shore and disappeared into the sand, another one was already following behind it. There was something strange about that. The persistence of it. The refusal to be still. Yoo Mia stood near the edge of the beach with her shoes hanging from one hand and listened for a little longer than everyone else did.
Behind her, Lee Gilyoung was already yelling about sandcastle construction.
Han Sooyoung was threatening to leave.
Kim Dokja looked tired despite the fact that absolutely nothing had happened yet.
Some things, Yoo Mia supposed, were universal constants.
