Summary
At seventeen, Ilya is exiled from Russia by his father and sent to 90's rural Canada, where he is forced to live with his childhood friend Svetlana and her rowdy band of foster siblings. Hurting from old traumas and unwilling to trust anyone, he arrives cold, closed off, and determined to survive the summer untouched. But the warmth of the rambling cottage, and the found family waiting inside it, begin to draw him out all the same.
Against his own nature, Ilya finds himself falling in love. With the land. With the house. And most of all with Shane Hollander, Svetlana’s foster brother, whose quiet steadiness begins to break through Ilya’s defenses. Through a magical summer of hikes and swimming holes, rowdy dogs, bonfires, and wildflowers, Ilya starts to thaw.
It’s perfect.
Until the world ends, and they find themselves relying on each other in ways they never dreamed, and doing things they never imagined to find their way back to each other.
