Mike can finally admit to himself that he loves Will Byers, but it's difficult to hide his love when his best friend acts almost as if he likes him back. But no, they're just friends.
They're friends when Will comforts Mike about his breakup; they're friends when they sleep over after parties, cuddling; they're friends when the Party finds out that the head cheerleader has a crush on Will; and they're definitely friends when they get wasted, and they make out. And no matter how much Mike wants to be more than friends, it will never happen.

Having sold their house in Hawkins a year and a half prior and moved to California, when they came back, and the town got put in lockdown, they didn’t have a place to go.
Mike had kindly offered up their place during dinner.

"Had fun?" Will asks playfully.
"Oh, yeah," Mike stretches sarcastically.
They stay like that for a little longer than necessary, then reluctantly separate, still looking at each other. Will can't hold the eye contact for long, and turns away, biting down a smirk.
"Goodnight, then," he breathes out.
"Yeah. Goodnight," Mike nods nervously and smiles. That same stupid dorky smile.
