Summary
Following a near-fatal suicide attempt, Ilya Rozanov is admitted to Calder Ward. He speaks almost exclusively Russian, refuses interpreters, and answers most questions with shrugs or silence. Staff struggle to establish even the most basic details of his life. Why he attempted suicide, who he left a note for, and what he has lost remain mysteries.
Across the ward, Shane Hollander is fighting a different battle. Intelligent, anxious, and trapped by an eating disorder, he attempts to maintain rigid control over food, exercise, and his body even as his health deteriorates. Despite increasing concern from staff, he struggles to recognise the severity of his illness.
As clinicians search for answers, the story reveals that recovery is rarely driven by dramatic breakthroughs. Instead, it emerges through trust, routine, patience, and human connection.Told entirely through clinical documentation, ward notes, emails, assessments, and multidisciplinary discussions.

Summary
“We’ve made a trade,” Coach announces. “For Shane Hollander.”
It’s like the ground drops out from beneath Ilya, and his heart falls from his chest. It tumbles past rock bottom, down to the cavern that shattered open inside of him on that night five years ago. The night when Ilya walked away from Hollander for the last time.
He can’t breathe.
(Or: Shane doesn’t get hurt, they break up, and they don’t talk for five long years. Until Shane is traded to Ottawa.)

Summary
And yeah, Shane knew that Ilya hadn’t been okay last time he was in Russia, but Ilya had had the very real excuse of a funeral to blame things on. Ilya had downplayed it as much as he could, and Shane hadn’t been there, he’d heard the fatigue and he’d seen Ilya’s tired smile, but he hadn’t felt the way Ilya’s hands were cold the entire time he was there, hadn’t seen through the screen the way Ilya dropped eight pounds in three weeks, hadn’t kept time when there were twenty hours in Ilya’s day instead of something closer to sixteen. Or, on the flip side, for the week or two after, when there had been approximately ten conscious hours in a day.
It was one thing to see something. It was another to feel it in your hands.
Ilya and Shane are so, so happy for their first year married. They’re playing in Ottawa together, they’re fucking winning, they’re together and out.
So now, after a year, Ilya should be fine. He should be great. He should not be flinching at small noises or nearly punching people off the clock or feeling like he’s drowning whenever he’s not on the ice.
Or: Ilya Rozanov, meet your PTSD.

Summary
Ilya Rozanov's life was busy, boring, and most of the time exhausting. He had too much to do, and usually not quite enough hours in the day to get it all done.
So when he starts visiting a new coffee shop and sees the cute barista—strong, handsome, genuine, and freckled—he notices. Without even planning for it, his routine changes when he can’t help but be fascinated by Shane’s long work hours, strict routines, and reckless disregard for his own safety.
Shane Hollander makes him Americanos. He blushes and stutters and stammers his way through their interactions. He’s wound so tightly that Ilya can’t help but want to unravel him.
There are no rules for this.

Summary
The pain has become too much for Ilya Rozanov to carry. For years, he’s lived with grief that never really healed, loneliness that followed him from Russia to Boston to Ottawa, and the constant exhaustion of pretending he’s okay when he hasn’t been in a very long time. Hockey gave him purpose. Shane Hollander gave him love. But neither could silence the ache left behind by losing his mother or the growing belief that maybe it was time to see her again.
So one morning, after one too many days suffering in silence, Ilya decides he’s done fighting. He leaves behind a letter for Shane, swallows a bottle of pills, and waits for the pain to end. Unfortunately for him, he is loved far too deeply for the universe to let him go that easily.
When the Hollanders find him in time, Ilya is forced into something he never planned for: surviving. And surviving means psychiatric holds, therapy sessions, difficult conversations, and learning how to let people care for him without believing he’s a burden. Most terrifying of all, it means letting Shane see every ugly, broken piece of him he tried so desperately to hide.

Or: Ilya Rozanov attempts suicide, but the Hollanders love him too much to let him go quietly.
