Summary
Xichen looks at his sworn brothers lying across the room. They seem so quiet. So still. He can barely believe what Wei Wuxian is saying. The rest of the world fades out as he stares.
“So what can be done?” he whispers.
“As far as I can see, we have two choices. Choice one: we destroy them completely. It would be difficult, but I think it could be done. But… it would be destroying them completely. It would mean shattering their souls.”
Xichen doesn’t feel the floor as he drops to his knees; it is just that one moment he is standing, and the next he is not. He isn’t even seeing them anymore, his eyes have unfocused, and yet they are all he can see.
Could he do it? Could he shatter their souls - destroy their very essence, prevent them from ever reincarnating, ever getting an opportunity to find peace - truly and utterly severing their link to this world and making fully certain that Xichen will never meet them again - all for the sake of the greater good?

Meng Yao had an important job. Meng Yao had a lot of work to do. Meng Yao should not be constantly texting Lan Xichen about medieval Italian free cities, Seretse Khama, the penumbra of the Bill of Rights, Pigouvian taxes, reducing Program Acquisition Unit Cost growth, and nurse practitioner licensing reform.
Meng Yao was getting very good at smiling at people during meetings and saying “this is important, I have to take this.”

When he had fled the brothel after his mother’s death to avoid being trapped there as a high earning young omega, he had hoped that he could live in his father’s sect. Even if his father didn’t accept him as a member of the Jin Clan, he would have been happy just to avoid his fate at the brothel.
Yet as soon as his father had realized he was omega, he had granted Jin Guangyao his name just to be able to sell him to an omega stable. Omegas of the nobility sold for more, after all.
It wasn’t quite the same as the brothel. He wasn’t expected to serve whichever alpha purchased his time. An omega stable was a place to find a concubine or a mistress, not a prostitute for a single night. Yet he was still an object for an alpha to peruse, an item to be bought at an alpha’s whim.
He hadn’t been able to truly escape his fate.
