Their bond is frayed, mangled by unspoken truths. Hannibal feels left in the dark, both figuratively and literally, by his lover. Will refuses to touch Hannibal with the lights on, and even in the dark, he is a suppressed, caged beast; it’s only a matter of time before one of them reaches their breaking point.

Of course, Hannibal is left trying to break down the walls Will has put up to keep him out. Hannibal must learn that in order to gain access to any vulnerability of Will's, he must first allow his mask to crack and show that he himself can be just as vulnerable.

Hannibal smiled ruefully.
“Time is my greatest enemy. Despite all my efforts to the contrary, it remains stubbornly beyond my control. Instead I have felt every second of the last three years of my incarceration. Your absence has gone through me like thread through a needle, Will,” he confessed. “Everything I do is stitched with its colour.”
Will comes home to what he expects to be an empty home as Walter and Molly are away visiting his grandparents. What he comes home to is an old flame...

Summary
Chiyoh was gracious enough to help them steal a boat (more like a yacht) and escape, as well as help tend to their injuries and other needs.
Unfortunately, the medical supplies are with Chiyoh, and Will realizes long after she's gone off to bed that he needs to change Hannibal's bandages, so he'll have to make do with what he has until morning. To make matters worse (or better), Hannibal is finally coherent.

Will had always associated being on the boatyards alongside his father with safety. That was the only parent he had, after all. He never knew a thing about his mother.
Or so he told himself.
When Will takes to caring for Hannibal and his injuries after the fall, the associations lead to him remembering a time before the boatyards, when a little boy needed just as much care. The revelations that follow break apart everything he knew about his childhood, and himself.
And, as usual, Hannibal only wants what's best for him.
