    Summary

Avery's mum comes to visit on a Saturday in November. She is warm and a little overwhelming and she brings food and she looks at Derek for approximately four minutes before pulling Avery aside to ask if that boy eats enough.

    He eats fine, Avery says.

She says: he looks like someone who forgets.

She is right. She is often right. Avery comes from people who are often right in this specific way, who see things without being told to look. It is, he has always known, one of the best and most dangerous things about his family.

Derek has his mum. Just his mum. Who raised him alone and knows him better than anyone and has been calling every three days since the hospital.

For one afternoon in November, Avery's family becomes something Derek moves through carefully, like a person navigating a new world and trying to understand the rules. The rules are: come in, sit down, eat something. There are no other rules. Derek doesn't quite believe this yet.

    Summary

Before all this, Derek Hutchins spoke five languages. He mentions it the way he mentions most things, incidentally, between bites of rice, as if it is a fact that requires no particular emphasis.
    Avery puts down his fork.

The next eight hours go like this: Avery pointing at things and saying what's that in French, Derek answering without looking up, and Avery losing his mind about it in small, incremental, well-documented steps. The Indonesian part is its own category of problem entirely.
