    Summary

She liked *them*. Both. Equally. In different ways that bent toward the same unbearable center.

And they were *dating* each other.

The thought struck like a physical blow, knocking her breath out from the inside. Of course they were. Of course they had chosen each other; they fit, they made sense, they were a pair that moved like they’d been in love for years.

Where was Rumi supposed to go with a feeling this big when the space she wanted was already occupied? The shame of it rose hot—too late, too much, too obvious. It curdled into something bitter she didn’t recognize in herself.

“You like Zoey...and Zoey likes *you*.” The words left her tasting ash. “There is no space for me...not like that.”

The sentence trembled in the air between them, thin as glass. And then it shattered. Rumi couldn’t handle it.

“What?” Mira’s alarm was immediate, genuine; she leaned in like proximity could stop a misunderstanding from hardening into a fact. “Rumi that’s no—”

    Summary

Her boot catches the edge of a tile—barely a slip, just a half step too short—and she stumbles.

And suddenly it’s years ago. Another rooftop. Another fall.

    “You lost your balance.”

Celine’s voice, cool as the blade in her hand.

“Demons won’t give you second chances, Rumi.”

The rod glows white-hot as it strikes across her back. She doesn’t scream. She never screams.

Pain means improvement. Weakness must be purged. Mistakes are fuel.

    OR
basically a rewrite of canon, starting at the Golden rehearsal and going through the pattern reveal and beyond. but ofc Rumi has a more tragic past where Celine physically and emotionally abused Rumi with a guise for improvement. (it's giving mother gothel)
The memories that haunt Rumi cause her to pull away, and the girls try to figure out why (and they succeed in a devastating way).

    Summary

Sighing to herself, she pulled her sleeves down again. Rumi didn’t care what the job paid. She didn't care about the pictures of the counter that looked impossibly complicated or that the owner, Mira, had a review online that simply stated: ‘The owner stares into your soul until you confess your past sins.’ She desperately needed the job. She needed to escape. This was her chance at a new start. The risk was terrifying, but the small, bright possibility of a completely new start filled her with a nervous kind of giddiness.

Stepping inside The Quiet Hearth was like she’d entered a warm embrace, the air thick with the rich scent of coffee and a hint of cinnamon. Soft, golden light from low-hanging warm bulbs cast a gentle glow over the room, illuminating the deep tones of the exposed wooden beams across the low ceiling. A scattering of small, organised tables and chairs, and plush, well-loved armchairs created intimate nooks, perfect for quiet conversation.

Or, All Rumi wanted was a quiet job. What she got was a chaotic artist, a terrifyingly kind boss, and a café that became her new home.
