“We almost lost them!” Kiri lifts her bow to him and stands, hand trembling; her eyes are visibly wet with fear and anger. Aonung stares at his spear, lips tight with sadness and pain. She shakes her bow and sobs. “They were so close, Aonung. One cut, one slash and they would have been—“ her voice breaks along with his heart.
Aonung moves his spear to the side and stands. He refuses to see it, to even imagine a possibility where they weren’t fast enough, too late to save and protect.
Kiri looks at him beyond the fire burning between them. Her golden eyes shimmer from the light of it, filled with memories he’s experienced with her and without. It’s the same ones their children have innocent and bright with hope.
He exhales, eyes wet, and goes to her. He takes the bow from her hand, heavy with bloodshed and duty. Kiri breathes and lifts her hand; she places it on his heart, still trembling. He covers her hand with his and grips it. He sees it in her eyes when she blinks away her tears—the immediate resolve to fight.
After the battle with the RDA, Kiri and Aonung find themselves in a new era of change and growth.

Tamtey has never known peace. Not since she was taken as a child and not since her sister, Aha’ri, was mercilessly shot walking away from the TAP program.
Now, her small Sarentu family has asked her to step up to olo’eykte. How can she take on this responsibility when she has no idea how to be Sarentu and can hardly keep her clan together?

So’lek is tired, tired of fighting in a war that has torn his family from him again and again. Now that he has accepted his place in the Sarentu, he will do whatever needs to be done to protect them from what is to come.
When Tamtey confides in him of Ri’nela’s request, he realizes that not every threat to their happiness comes packaged and stamped with the RDA label. Some are internal and must be fought alone.
But that does not mean he cannot support her at her side.
