Summary
Maomao was never a big fan of cats. Throughout her upbringing, she grew to dislike the constant comparison her peers would make between her and her namesake.
Maomao had believed Jinshi shared her mostly neutral stance on felines. However, shortly after she elaborated on how her annoyance towards cats stemmed from their off-put behavior and tendency to warm up to humans only after receiving treats, he had suddenly seen the appeal.
Later it became apparent to Maomao that this appeal had less to do with cats, but more about the strange proclivities he tended to have in the bedroom. For a reason unbeknownst to her, the idea of Maomao acting like a cute little kitten riled up Jinshi enough to make him look like a love-struck puppy.

Summary
She continued her mixing until she heard a crunch from one of the fallen leaves outside the shop’s door. Nobody passed through that area of the building during these hours of the night. The lively chatter and rustle of the Verdigris House could be faintly heard, but those chambers were located way south of where the noise was coming from. Maomao slowly put down the mortar as the footsteps became more apparent with each second. They increased in proximity until finally a firm fist rapped against the entrance door.
The apothecary hesitantly approached the door while her mind ran through all the possible people who would intrude at such hours of the night. She did not expect to open the door to find the gorgeous nymph that frequently roamed the loggias of the rear palace.
“Jinshi-sama, what brings you here at such hours of the night?” Maomao questioned, noting his lack of companionship from both Gaoshun and Basen, his usual assistants.
“I came to visit you. I believe we have some…important matters to discuss,”Jinshi voiced.

“I don’t want to leave.”
“But you can’t stay here.”
She stares at him with cold eyes, but not with indifference as she once might have. The complete opposite. She’s too invested in staying by his side to simply accept what he proposes and walk away. She keeps her hands folded in front of her, respectful in the presence of the emperor, and her head bowed low.
“What was it all for, sir?” She asks, knowing that it’s out of line to question the Son of Heaven, but demanding answers all the same.
He doesn’t take his eyes off her; they’re obviously pained but full of certainty, as if the unilateral decision he’s made is the right one. It’s only right in that he has the power to make it.
“I promised you that I’d never cage you,” He says simply, although his voice is scratchy and worn down from what might have been hours of crying before this meeting. “That’s a promise that I will not break.”

Jinshi ascends as Emperor of Li. Maomao is sent away to the West. Five years pass before they meet again; they end up playing pretend, like they always do.

"Virginity is real as long as you have it." Pairin giggled. She got up from her chair and ruffled Maomao's hair, who batted her hand away.
Pairin moved closer to Joka, talking about which food they should order. As her sisters debated between mapo tofu and dan dan noodles, Maomao barely remembered to offer her opinion. In her mind, a plan was beginning to form.
Amidst a personal crisis and longing to shut her sisters up about her sex life, Maomao plans an experiment with a simple objective: losing her virginity and seeing what's all that fuss about sex. After careful consideration, she chooses an ideal partner: Jinshi, an acquaintance who happens to be the biggest known playboy in campus. Now, she only needs to pull off a simple, five-step plan to get him actually interested in her.
