They're having breakfast when he tells them. He only remembers because he'd dreamed weird again last night. This time it was an older boy, who was trying to stop a little golden-haired baby from crying.
“What,” says Mom, in that flat voice she gets when she's trying not to sound surprised.
“...what?” says Dad, who clearly hadn't been listening. That's fine, Shane forgets to listen too, sometimes.
“I keep dreaming people I don't know,” Shane repeats patiently. He can be patient.
Shane Hollander habitually ends up in other people's dreams, which is fine. It's a family trait, on both sides, to slip into the dreams of the people you love. What's less fine is how Shane keeps dreaming strangers.
Or: like if a soulmates au took several detours.

Before Felix could remove his headphones, he heard it. Heavy, borderline panicked breaths. Felix realized that it must be Hollander. His mic was not turned off when he left the interview. Footsteps. And then a door opening and closing. They had filmed the interview that morning at the offices of the Irina Foundation. It sounded like maybe he had gone into his office.
“Hey, what is it? What is wrong?” Another voice. Unmistakable anywhere. Even if Felix hadn’t spent weeks now listening to it, he would still have recognized Ilya Rozanov’s voice.

What if the filmmaker making the documentary about Hollander and Rozanov discovered the truth about their relationship. So he approaches Shane and Ilya about filming them over the course of the 2020/2021 season to create an honest documentary that tells the true story of their lives. Summary
Ever since he had learned what skating was and, subsequently, hockey, life had been pretty straightforward for Shane Hollander. He had approached the sport that made his body move exactly how he wanted and his mind quiet with the same determination a scholar did academia: fully, completely, devotedly.
It hadn’t been long before he had surpassed every kid at training, his edges sharp, hold strong, passes clean. His mother had seen the potential almost immediately and, soon enough, his destiny had been mapped out and he couldn’t have been happier about it: minor league and International Prospect Cup, the draft, 1st overall pick, Montreal, captaincy, cups, rings. He had everything planned, a clear path ahead, and success had been basically assured with the type of talent he was.
Or it had been until he had gotten himself a fucking stalker.

Summary
The sports world is on fire. A leaked, heavily redacted copy of the Raiders' joke "truce" letter to Montreal, paired with photos of their drunken night of bonding out at a club, has the entire public convinced that the Montreal-Boston playoff series is a multi-million-dollar fraud — and that Ilya and Shane are two of the masterminds behind it.
Ilya doesn’t give a shit about the headlines. He doesn’t care about the media circus swarming his hotel lobby, or the strict coach-mandated lockdown confining him to his room. All he knows is Shane is across town spiraling, and he's not with him.
Good thing Cliff Marleau is willing to do whatever it takes to help his best friend get to his man.

Summary
Ilya widens his eyes, moves his hands in an impatient “get on with it” motion. He has the urge to say it for him, end both their misery. Shane blinks rapidly a few times, takes another deep breath. “I want to stop,” he says simply.
Ilya lets out one humorless laugh, “Stop what?”
Shane ignores him. “At the All Star Game, I told you I liked you. And you said about Russia and your family. And I looked some things up. I get it. I get it better now. I know we can’t but I can’t stop wanting to be…more. Unless we stop.”
