Summary
It is 3:14 AM when the graphite begins to move on its own. Locked in his basement and starved of sleep, Mike Wheeler watches in terror as a phantom pencil tears into his old D&D notebook. It is Will’s handwriting—jagged, erratic, and desperate. Will is trapped in the freezing dark of the Upside Down, and the paper is their only bridge. But just as the messages shift from a plea for survival into a raw, devastating confession of a love hidden since they were twelve, the pencil snaps. The page goes completely blank. Then, the telephone rings. Miles away, Will’s physical body has just been found in his bed—comatose, unresponsive, and mysteriously freezing to death from severe hypothermia. While the doctors rush to stabilize a boy whose heart is failing, and the Byers family collapses from grief, Mike is the only one who knows the horrific truth: Will isn't brain-dead. Summary
1991 in New York, Manhattan, brings a lot of things: toxic boyfriends, bad hookups, narcissistic professors, friends you smoke with on a tiny balcony, and the universal feeling of wanting something you can't have.
But that all changes when Will Byers tries and fails to move on from Mike Wheeler. He dates the wrong person, the safest option, and after that relationship implodes, Will realises that Mike Wheeler just may be his kryptonite.
The same Mike Wheeler who is still confused, still deep in denial, who sends his best friend letters, instead of actually talking, and somehow, shoots, misses, and still scores – with the help of his Irish dormmate, Jasper Murphy. Will Byer's life is crumbling. It's his first year at Hawkins high and he feels like an alien. His thoughts are entirely centered around food in a last ditch effort to control something since everything else seems to be going askew. He's moving through the world just trying to make it another day. If only there was something or someone to make it better...
Mike Wheeler can't handle his own mouth. He keeps picking unnecessary fights with his friends and everyone around him. Nothing makes sense, and for the life of him he can't stop thinking about Will Byers. Even after trying to heal their relationship, Mike can't seem to stop saying things he doesn't mean. His heart and his brain are at constant war with each other. The only way to fix it would be to finally be honest with himself, but he knows he can never do that.
OR...After the California trip, Mike and Will grow even further apart. As they start 10th grade, Will develops self destructive behaviors. When they begin to rekindle their lost friendship (And maybe turn it into more), but eventually Mike notices Will's harmful tendencies and confronts him.
