Maybe Billy had just been a dick because he was a dick. Maybe there was nothing Steve could have done, no friendly hand or offhanded mention of a guest room that would have swayed the balance.
Maybe Nancy’s friend had always been meant to die.
Maybe he, Steve, was always going to be a fuckup that peaked in high school, Upside Down or no Upside Down.
Not that any of this mattered.
Billy was dead.
Steve comes across a box of Billy’s things and suddenly everything gets more complicated. A Halloween story about the veil between worlds and the ghosts we all have.

Steve cleared his throat.
Billy spun, cheese dangling guiltily from his mouth.
Steve just nodded at him, walking to the freezer. Fuck. Those definitely were his hot pockets. Billy was sort of half crying into Steve's hot pockets. His eyes were glassy and red, either crossfaded to fuck or red from crying, or both. His nose was running. He looked kind of terrible.
Steve wanted to lick his face.

Simon doesn't know why he asks. No, it's not okay. None of this is okay.
“Please,” he continues when Simon doesn't respond. “I-I need permission.”
Simon closes his eyes. It's his own type of silent defiance. If this man isn't just fucking with him – if he does, for some strange reason, feel bad or guilty about capturing him, then good. Let him drown in it.
Simon is captured by a compulsive liar who, bafflingly, gives him food, smiles at him, and pretends the Quiet Rapture never happened.
Grace saves the life of a violent human who seems to be under the terrifying delusion that every star and planet has disappeared without a trace.

“If I die, you have to get my body out of here,” the man pleaded, but Grace had to go. His oxygen was out. The guy would be dead in six minutes. “You have to get me out, even if I’m dead. Hey!”
“Just hold on!” Grace propelled himself through zero gravity, away from the radio.
“Don’t leave me here-!” The roar echoed through the ship halls.

Summary
Ryland doesn't know where he is, what he's doing, or why he's doing it. All he knows is that he's in a universe with no stars and that an organization called the COI found the Hail Mary spinning out into deep space.
