Jiro missed the days when he and Saburo used to be close, back when they had been inseparable. Everywhere they went, they went together. Everything they did, they did together. He missed the innocent gleam that used to live in Saburo's eyes, the way he would run to Jiro first whenever anything happened. More than anything, though, he missed the way Saburo used to look at him with love rather than derision.
He had always recalled those days fondly, but now he found himself longing even for the days when they would bicker constantly, slinging insults back and forth and even getting into fights until Ichiro told them to knock it off. They may not have gotten along much then, but it had still been better than this. These days, Saburo rarely acknowledged his existence. Even when he did, he treated Jiro as if he were nothing more than an inconvenience. There was a rift between them now, and it only seemed to be widening with time.
Yet, maybe it was better this way....

Saburo especially outgrew their homebase constellation in the sand, outgrew having to hold his penguin’s or Jiro’s hand. Made it through the years crying… plenty, sure, because the world outside the sandbox and Jiro’s warmth was cold and cruel and harsh, but when he emerged as a prodigy and kept in mind that the growing universe was so much bigger than all their troubles and anxieties, it was nothing he couldn’t stand; he was just a new star in the sky, after all. All that ever mattered to him, too, was that even when he and his brothers weren’t together, they were, notwithstanding life and circumstance.
