Summary
They sit there for a second, eyes locked and full of mirth, her self-satisfied smirk as she takes another sip, drops of tea rolling down his rounded cheeks, and then it’s over, they’re both cackling, her deep belly laugh that she rarely lets out mixing with his pleased giggle. She feels giddy, silly in a way that used to feel familiar but hasn’t as of late, free. She manages another sip of tea, actually swallowing this time, but not before Ted can jerk his arms up in surrender, eliciting a fresh burst of laughter from both of them.
Just another attempt at salvaging season 3, starting from the end of 3x10.

Rupert was self-conscious about many things, actually, and he took it out on her, made her feel the same. Her self-consciousness had become a habit over all their years together. So greedy, he’d tell her when she dared to be unsatisfied after sex, his lip curling in that humorless smile, the one honed to a razor’s edge that always sliced her down. She learned not to ask for more. She learned to hide anything too honest, too crass, too authentic that he might use to make her feel cheap.
Sitting here in her kitchen, though, years removed from divorce--from Rupert--her perspective colored the memory differently. How had she learned to be embarrassed to ask for more, when Rupert was never embarrassed to be perpetually inadequate?
