Summary
“He’s not,” Christopher interrupted after he swallowed, his eyebrows furrowed, “that’s not- no. Bucks not my uncle.”
His abuela waved a dismissive hand, “Oh, of course not, I know that. Isn’t that a thing you young ones do? Refer to your parents' close friends as aunts or uncles?”
And here’s the thing, yes. He refers to Hen and Karen as his aunties. He’s never blinked at that. He routinely tells people that he and Denny are basically cousins.
Sure, he even calls Maddie and Chim his aunt and uncle without a second thought, but that’s because - well, that’s because..
“He’s not my uncle,” Christopher repeated, “He’s my other dad.”

OR Five times Christopher Diaz sets the record straight on who Buck is to him and the one time he makes sure Buck knows it too.

Summary
Something had changed between those two freaks while they were in Nashville and Howard ‘Chimney’ Han knew it. He would bet his captaincy on it, his life even, that Buck and Eddie had come back from the firefighter games having finally figured out their shit.
The problem was, Chimney’s known for making jokes about the nature of their friendship. A little ‘stop annoying your boyfriend Buckley he’s got a job to do’ or a ‘Diaz, your heart eyes are showing, back to the task at hand please’ was thrown out regularly by the captain and it was usually followed by an eye roll and dismissal from the two men.
To everyone else they were acting the same, but Chimney knew. He could see it, the twinkle in Buck's eye whenever he looked at Chim with the smallest hint of a smirk - like he knows something Chimney doesn’t. Eddie’s little raised eyebrow and tilted head, a smug smile on his annoyingly handsome face that held so many secrets.
It was, quite frankly, driving him a little insane.

Summary
“What just happened?” Eddie asked, looking down at the arrow in his hand in confusion.
Hen and Ravi’s loud cackling caused both Buck and Eddie to look at them, Eddie was still slightly shellshocked and flushed a deep red. Ravi was doubled over, using Hen as a crutch to stay standing, “D-dude! C-cupid just s-shot-“ he struggled to speak between laughs.
Buck looked past Eddie and went still, Eddie followed his gaze and turned to face the half dressed man that was waiting patiently behind them, a bright mischievous smirk on his face. It almost looked flirty, and Buck wanted to smack the look right off his face.
Cupid just shot Eddie in the ass.

Eddie plans to woo Buck. Buck thinks a certain arrow has something to do with it.

Summary
Eddie didn’t hate charity.
He just hated this stupid event.
“Okay! Next up for the taking is… Evan Buckley of the 118!”
Buck wasn’t a prize (ignoring the fact in this context - he was), and he wasn’t a bit of meat to be paraded in front of a cheering crowd. He wasn’t some cut and dry macho fireman with the personality of wet drywall.
He was brave, and strong, and kind, and considerate, and he deserved better than to be standing on some poorly constructed stage in downtown LA about to be auctioned off to some random person for a night of romance.

Summary
“So Buck,” Hen took the warning look as an invitation, “Who are you kissing at midnight?”
Eddie choked on his drink, a few coughs spluttering out. Buck thumped his fist on Eddie’s back without thinking, leaving his hand there to rub soothing circles into his friend's back as Eddie caught his breath.
Eddie glared at Hen.
Buck looked between the two with suspicion before turning to Hen, letting his hand fall back to his lap, “No one I guess,” he shrugged, and then because he hates himself, “ since I can’t kiss the person I want to.”
It was the wrong thing to say.
Hen and Karen both straightened, their eyes widening in sync as they both leaned forward with interest. Eddie had gone still beside him, his body completely tense as he looked at Buck with wide eyes.
“Oh, do tell?” Karen pounced first.
Buck stammered and panicked, “Woah I mean-“
“Yeah Buck,” Hen grinned, “Who do you want to kiss at midnight?”
•••
Bucks a little sad that everyone has someone to kiss at midnight except him, even Eddie! Not that Eddie will tell him who it is he’s planning on smooching at the bells.

Summary
Oh, fuck him, did he almost sleep with a serial killer? Distantly, he thought, Hen and Chim are never going to let me live this down. And then he thought, I might not live at all.
-----

Summary
Running to the frontlines from a childhood he never had. Taking a bat to the wall with his son in the next room. Having an affair with the spitting image of his dead wife.
Eddie knows he’s never been good at grieving, knows he’s never been good at losing what little he allows for himself in the first place. This is why he also knows his coping mechanisms can’t possibly get any worse.
Buck, as he so often does, makes him reevaluate his assumptions.

Summary
Captain Buckley’s face creases, his expression disfavourable. “I’m, uh, not really into the whole Sir thing,” he tells Eddie, scratching along the slope of his grey-stubbled chin. “Still getting used to being called Cap, if I’m being honest. Most people here just call me Buck.”
“Buck?” Eddie repeats the name with the intonation of a question.
“There were three other Evans in my class at the Academy,” Captain Buckley explains, shrugging casually with the huge mountain range of his wide, wide shoulders. “Even after all these years, it’s managed to stick.”

Summary
Buck had finally understood... it had taken him 3 months, 3 months of silences and angry looks, of orders given coldly and endless lists of tasks at the station, of people leaving when he sat down at the table, of conversations stopping when he arrived.
3 months but he had finally understood: Station 118 did not forgive and those he had fought for had turned their backs on him.
3 months but it had become clear to him: he was not welcome there and that was not his family, it never had been. And now all that was left was to let go.
But a call and a girl who reminds him too much of himself could be the solution to the cold in his life and his heart.
