    After a few minutes, his coffee was gone. Standing up for another glass, he had to push through the crowd. He groaned softly, hating the fancy, crowded night and wanting to go home already. A jostle from the crowd diverted his attention, and he collided with a woman, causing her to spill her wine. "Oh, I'm so sorry," he exclaimed, his cheeks flushing as he reached out to help her stand.

     

    Noticing who the woman was, his face became even redder, tt was Nessa, the farmer he had bumped into. She smiled warmly, her eyes twinkling despite the mishap. "Hey Shane, no harm, no fowl," she reassured him, her voice melodic and soothing. They laughed over their mutual love of chicken puns, easing the tension. Despite the elegant setting, Shane felt a flicker of comfort. Maybe this night wouldn't be so bad after all.

    Part two of my work, "The Writers' Wife." Shane and the farmer navigate their complicated emotions towards each other after their night together. Avoidance, attraction, and self-hatred are all interwoven in this story that permanently changes the lives of three Pelican Town residents.
