Its cover was made of cracked brown leather, carved with delicate patterns of flowers similar to the one in one of mothers specimens. Their shapes twisted and curled like vines and blended into each other.

Captain Barnacles: The autopilot system malfunctioned, and it took us through the storm. The Octopod is in manual steering mode, and I am currently piloting it in my pajamas.
Shellington: How are you feeling, Captain?
Captain Barnacles: Hanging in there, Shellington. Are you writing that down, too?
Shellington: Yep.The Octopod's autopilot system malfunctions, and takes the ship right through a storm. Captain Barnacles sacrifices his sleep to steer the ship through the night, making sure they get out of the storm and arrive safe and sound at their destination.

Summary
