Bucky doesn’t laugh anymore, hardly ever. He doesn’t scribble down equations and diagrams like he’s gonna beat Howard Stark at his own game. He doesn’t hum, doesn’t dance, doesn’t look up at the night sky in quiet awe.
But he still smokes. He still smokes.
Steve holds onto that.

Summary
Go to sleep, Steve. His friend says, instead of what he really means. Bucky had gotten really good at that in the past few years.
“You know I don’t need to rest as much as the other guy, Buck.”
Even a super-soldier’s gotta sleep, pal. Bucky leans forward, and Steve can almost, almost, see the soft fan of his lashes, the shape of his mouth. You know you can't keep going like this. You’re in tailspin, buddy. Eventually, you’re gonna crash.
“I’m fine.” He says, because he too has gotten good at lying over the years.
Yeah. That’s what you are. You’re sitting here talking to ghosts like a nutjob ‘cause you’re fine.
In which Bucky falls off the train, and Steve spirals. Let it not be said that Steve Rogers ever did anything halfway.

Summary
Castiel has not been holy in a very long time, and he has never been able to resist the shape of Dean’s name around his lips, the very sound of it far lovelier than all the choirs of heaven. So he says it again, louder this time, like perhaps it may be enough to get the sleeping man to open his eyes, to turn his holy gaze towards Castiel and grin for long enough that the wickedness brought upon by a broken silence is repaired by the sanctity of his smile.
“Dean.” Castiel breathes, channeling whatever grace he has left within this broken body into the words, tries somehow to will the very thought into being.
“Wake up.”
In which Michael does not leave his vessel without consequences, and Castiel will do anything for Dean to wake up again.

Bucky is sick, Steve realizes with a pang, cradling his right arm to his chest and trembling violently, eyes shifting deliriously under his thick layer of hair. Still, he’d come to Steve, somehow found Steve, when just a month ago he couldn’t even remember his own name.
(Steve thinks back to the Potomac, all those weeks ago. How long had he been lying, safe and healing in a hospital bed, while Bucky wandered the streets, sick and confused?)
In which Steve carries Bucky’s pain like a weight on his shoulders, and Bucky just wants someone to tell him how to be human again.

Summary
He’s standing in a dark room, and all Steve can see is the metal table in the center and the man (Bucky Bucky Bucky) strapped into it, covered in so much grime and blood that it takes a second for Steve’s mind to catch up to what he’s seeing.
(The room is abandoned. They’d left him here, hadn’t even bothered to undo the straps in their escape, just discarded Bucky like he was worthless. Like he was nothing.)
In which Steve finds his best friend and breaks a promise, because if there’s one person he never fails to let down, it’s Bucky.
