(This happens before canon and for me makes their argument more impactful in the book, and I feel like we were robbed of this beautiful friendship and possible relationship. They have their beautiful moments, but I would love it if they were times by 3).

But the thing Alastor finds a little bit pathetic about himself is that, unfortunately, he IS also an Altruist. Besides, sometimes replanting that apple, making it grow and thrive, could bring him more benefits than gorging on it the second he gets it.
