To gain something, it must be taken from another. At least, that has always been for the creatures that roam the world. A cycle that has continued for as long as the divine has ordained it to be the passing of power and title, onto themselves and their creations.
But at some point, something has to change, a loop that cannot be left unbroken.
(And he finds that maybe hope is not such a lie to hold on to.)
