Summary
After 10 long years, Evie is finally given permission to leave her mother’s castle and attend school on the Isle of the Lost. Evie is thrilled, even if she’s not exactly well-received by a certain former friend.
Mal quickly learns that Evie’s life locked up in the Castle Across the Way has been far from ideal and eventually lets go of her lingering feelings of ill-will towards the girl who failed to invite her to her birthday party all those years ago.
A look at life on the Isle before the core four go to Auradon. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t great. Particularly for Evie. But Jay, Carlos, and especially Mal are determined to change that.

Life on the Isle hadn't been kind, it had been brutal and cruel and has left them with scars that endure and inner-demons that rear their heads at unsuspecting times. Life in Auradon is better, of course, but kids from the Isle don't take kindly to threats against their friends, or what they perceive to be threats.
Or someone may have overacted and landed them all in Fairy Godmother's office facing expulsion from Auradon Prep.

“Obviously it won't work, but we don’t really have a choice.” Carlos exhaled, rubbing at his eyes with the heels of his palms. Diego stood before him, a pained look on the young man's face. He stepped forward, and engulfed his younger cousin in a hug.
“Dammit.” he hissed, pulling his younger cousin, younger brother, closer, fighting to hold back tears. “I should have killed her. Years ago. I should have killed her so she couldn't have done this, so she couldn't have done anything to you.” He took a shaky breath.
Carlos shook his head, his own eyes stinging. “It wouldn't have worked…. Not then, not now. They’re too powerful.”
