Summary
The little coastal town of Awa'atlu, Neteyam's dearly loathsome residence since the early age of five, smells of acacia's honey, fish and the scarlet red dried ristras of peppers hanging off of the walls of the shacks in rich bouquets, their bitter, often throat prickling smell mingling with the slightly damp saltiness of the ocean breeze that drifted over the massive formations of the limestones, emerging out of the coast, protecting the little cribs from the tyrannic waves of the sea.
Spreadtalk circulated from tongue to tongue, legends of the village and its folks whispered, where a few, strange kind of phenomenon occurs —stolen bundles of fishes, plundered huts, the whisper-like shuffle of the leaves of the acacia trees, and a lonely, tender mewl of a voice in the midnight, the cries of the moon, as some might decieve, however the one people tend to notice last, and the most —a villager, abruptly, inexplicably going missing.
Sirens.
Superstitions.

Aonung used to be an active child. So lively to the point people suspected him of ADHD. But everything changes at the age of 15 when he is diagnosed with a terminal heart disease.
Years pass, long years of carrying on his back sleepless nights, chest pain and suffocation. Neteyam wrote beautiful songs on broken keys. It meant they were honest. But even beauty wasn’t eternal.
The vast sky of stars knew Ao’nung couldn’t be perfect forever, and after years of partnership, Neteyam’s time was running out.

After summer break, everything is the same; more or less. Neteyam randomly stopped talking to him one day. He cut ties like it was nothing, seemingly without any given reason. Ao'nung tries to act unfazed. It happens - sometimes friendships simply mellow out. Even the close ones.
He has enough problems to deal with already anyway. His alcoholic mother, unpaid bills, school, and the failing grades that come with it. At least Rotxo is still there.
Tsireya urges him to reconnect. Her suggestion makes everything better. And worse. Ao'nung is not prepared for the avalanche that is about to hit him. He is not prepared for all of the confusing, foreign, and crushing feelings that come with it, either. He starts having weird dreams; about living and dying. Drowning and surviving. He hates having to deal with all that, so he doesn't. Instead, he focuses on holding his best friend's hand.This fic is NOT a light read! Please mind the tags and the trigger warnings at the beginning of each chapter. If you're not ready for an emotional rollercoaster, please don't read this. Summary
The Tsika'u are really nice people: Tonowari is a regular suburban dad and though at first Ronal seemed cold, once you got to know her, it turned out she’s great too. Their eldest daughter, Tsireya, is possibly the kindest person Neteyam has ever met and since their first meeting, she did everything to make him and his siblings feel included. There is also the youngest, baby Pril, such a cute little bean, always brightening everyone’s day with her toddler babbles.
But there’s also Ao’nung. That absolute fucking disgrace to his family’s good name.
Neteyam honestly never understood what the fuck went wrong with him. Maybe the doctor dropped him on the head at birth and or he swallowed too much chlorine water during all his swimming tournaments or perhaps, he was put on Earth solely to test Neteyam’s patience. Either way, he was sure of one thing and one thing only: Ao'nung hated him and the feeling was very much reciprocated.

Aonung’s parents had officially divorced years ago. Now that his father had remarried, Aonung was forced to move in with his mother and his little sister, a girl he was no longer close to like they had been when they were kids.
The night before school started, he went to a party at his new friend’s house. Rotxo kept saying life here wasn’t so bad.
Aonung didn’t know anyone. As he stood awkwardly in the crowded room, his eyes accidentally landed on a boy with long hair and a decent-looking face. The boy was lost in the moment, high. He was kissing a girl passionately while she clung to him.
Suddenly, the boy noticed Aonung staring. He pulled away slightly and flashed a small, knowing smile.

Neteyam acted fine. He was good. Ao’nung knows otherwise. Especially when he catches glimpses of his ‘friend’ when the other thought no one was looking.

Even though Lo'ak never fails to let Neteyam know that they're fucked up people.
