This was all his fault.
He entertained her jokes. Encouraged their conversations. And God-Emperor take him, he was the one who had even suggested the game in the first place. He could tell himself that he'd only wanted company, a couple hours of friendly conversation. But at the heart of that lay the problem. He had wanted. Nothing good ever came of that.
As if proving his point, Maude had returned from her room in a way that could, charitably, be described as dressed.
