It wasn’t anything that Grace had never done before. Yet this time, Rocky felt all five of his hearts racing at its smile. Grace’s giggle was so similar to an Eridian’s. Rocky wanted to make it laugh again, to be the reason for its joy.
Such thoughts had barely begun when there was suddenly a strange physical feeling inside Rocky. It felt like something was moving, a strange buzz reverberating throughout his body. It was deeply uncomfortable and continued to increase in intensity until Rocky suddenly felt like he had to open his ventral seal right now and get something out out out. Grace's journey to Erid is long and taxing. 4 whole years spent on the Hail Mary by Rocky's side has inevitably brought them closer together, despite the last year mostly consisting of Grace trying his very best not to die and keep himself from throwing up taumoeba into the bathroom. It’s only after his body has stopped fighting desperately for his life that his mind has the time to catch up on everything that has happened with Rocky…and on Earth without him. It doesn’t help that he’s going to be the only human on a planet of Eridians and that his best friend’s mate doesn’t seem to like him much at all.

Ryland Grace tries his best to begin to live again rather than just be alive, balancing his severe attachment to Rocky and helping to fix Rocky’s marriage to a frustrated Adrian.

Sometimes, when two Eridians have a strong connection, they swap bodies. This is typically taken as a sign that they are supposed to mate. Rocky has swapped bodies with Adrian many times, but he never thought he’d swap with an alien.
Swapping will improve communication dramatically, giving them more access to each other’s languages, so this development is really good for the mission.
Unfortunately, the alien isn’t taking this very well.

Ryland’s mouth opened, but nothing came out. His heart slammed against his ribs like it wanted to escape and hide under the desk with the class hamster. He was just Mr. Grace. The guy who drew cartoon planets on the board, who stayed late helping kids glue together messy dioramas of the solar system, who once spent an entire lunch period comforting a sobbing girl because her goldfish had “gone to the great fishbowl in the sky.” He graded spelling tests on vocabulary words like photosynthesis and asteroid. Aliens did not know his name. Aliens did not ask for science teachers.
The marker slipped from his fingers and clattered to the floor.
