Around 1890, in Victorian England, high-born Hermione refuses to even entertain the thought of marriage or romantic entanglement; the very idea has always caused her nausea and contempt. For her, love was nothing more than a construct designed to manipulate and control women. This acute awareness of the patriarchy and the woman’s role within marriage allowed her to always find a way to sabotage any suitor who dared darken her doorstep.
However, everything changes when her parents achieve the improbable: they finally secure a fiancé whose family is also in desperate need of a match. Faced with no other choice, Hermione finds herself forced to marry a stranger—and, worse, a man.
