Far too early, V stirred awake.
He didn’t bolt upright, didn’t gasp, didn’t reach for a weapon—at least, not this time. This was the kind of waking up that felt like surfacing through jello, muddy and slow. He rolled over on his borrowed cot, and the worn-out frame groaned under his weight, the whole thing swaying slightly as he settled on his back. He let out a slow breath, blinking up at the sagging arch of his tent. Each long, heavy blink felt like a miniature nap, a short relief from the daylight that peeked through the folds of old canvas fabric.
Outside, the camp was already rousing to life. Muffled conversations and occasional bursts of laughter wove together with the clanking of metal and the hum of engines sputtering to life. The Aldecaldos were early risers.

For once, V felt like he belonged.
‘Course, nothing good lasts in Night City. He got three years of it, and then he was fucked by Arasaka once again. Every second after losing Jackie, V just wanted to fucking cry. He couldn’t take it. He was too much of a pussy to kill himself, though, and Johnny wouldn’t let that happen, too busy hellbent on stealing V’s body and getting revenge like the psycho terrorist he was. But, sometimes, it wasn’t bad.
