Before this entire miserable year on the wrong side of the Atlantic started, Viktor thought she knew what her people look like.
Scientists, on the whole, are a pale, skinny bunch, prone to vitamin deficiencies and questionable haircuts. As a rule, they cannot throw or catch balls. The ones that do have social skills – and that’s a minority in and of itself – tend to exercise them mainly during board game nights. Scientists do not dance, they do not play team sports, and they do not tan. She fits right in, she supposes.
But here is Jayce Talis. And when she runs, it is not in a shuffling way. Viktor would know: she watches the woman jog from her window, though she’d rather die than admit to this behaviour.
The cause, Viktor decides after two weeks of shameful, absurd, undignified window-staring, must be something uniquely American. There is no other explanation for it.
