    #2
“I will see you next month.”

He turns. It’s somehow harder than playing in the playoffs with bruised ribs. Everything in him is screaming to not let this perfect summer end, but that’s not possible. They both want to play this season. They both want to hoist the cup. This is the other part of their relationship, the part they know like the maps of each other's skin. It will be exciting to see how finally being honest about their feelings will affect their respective games. Ilya is sure it will be for the better. Shane has only ever made him better. So he takes one step, and then another. He’s several yards away when he hears Shane’s voice cut through the hustle of airport traffic.

“29 days. I am counting, Rozanov.”

Ilya smiles at him, deliberately brushing his shoulder against Shane’s. “It was not as peaceful as I thought it would be, being dead,” he says. “Not existing. It was not much of anything, really. And then every morning I woke up and was scared to know how you were doing. It made me so sad, to see you so sad. So much sadder than I’ve ever been.”

    Summary

Ilya died, yes, but then the doctors saved him. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the ambulance, three electric shocks, two emergency surgeries, twenty-six units of blood. Ilya died, but then he came back.

If only Shane could get his subconscious to understand that.

    After TLG

“So what do you think your fate is, then?”
And all Shane can think is, loving you.

“You remember what happened with the plane,” Shane blurted. "I was so scared when I heard that something might have happened. But even then, even before I got to talk to you, I guess it didn’t really hit me. That something really could have happened. It felt like it was a nightmare and I was going to wake up any second. Like, of course you weren’t dead. You couldn’t be dead.” Shane scraped his thumbnail over a bit of gunk stuck to the kitchen island. “But this time, you were dead. And it just sort of hit me. That you’re a person that can die.”

Rozanov signed with CSKA Moscow. Three years.
“I needed a change,” he said finally.
    “From what?”
From Shane. From loving someone I couldn’t have. From a life that I’d never be able to claim. “From everything.”
He hated almost every moment of his life. But he would do what needed to be done. He’d play his part. He would smile and laugh and pretend. Even if he was dying inside.

Shane walked without direction, his mind racing. Ilya was coming to Ottawa. Ilya, who’d been in Russia for three years. Ilya, who Shane hadn’t spoken to since their breakup. Ilya, who he had gotten used to being gone – not playing against him, not seeing him on the road, not existing in Shane’s daily reality. Shane had adjusted to Ilya being gone. Had let himself believe it would stay that way.Shane had moved on. He had Marcus. So it didn’t matter that Ilya was coming to Ottawa.
And as Shane headed back to the locker room for the final countdown to puck drop, he realized with a sinking feeling that he’d been lying to himself all summer.
It did matter that Ilya was here.
    It mattered more than anything.
