After months of sleeping with anyone he found worthy and willing, he felt better, no longer tethered to emotions like before. Until he swipes right on Astarion.
Astarion, whose love life was practically a disaster zone, finally felt ready to embrace the dating scene again, and swiped right on Gale. He managed to convince Gale to take him out on a proper date despite the man's initial resistance, even if Astarion knew that the end result would just be a one-night stand.
But maybe, just maybe, they both swiped right, on Mr. Right.

Gale swallowed heavily as he forced himself to meet Astarion's gaze. “Please. I…I can't explain, but it is imperative that I consume the Weave from your ring. I'm afraid the item—”
“Will be destroyed,” Astarion cut in. “Yes, yes. I've been through this already, darling. But you can't absorb the Weave from an item that you yourself enchanted. So you can put the idea of eating my ring out of your pretty little head.”

Astarion meddles with a magical item and finds himself sent back to the year of Gale's self-imposed isolation, where he makes an impression on the miserable wizard.

This man was simply unbelievable. Gale could have gone back to his goddess, gained her forgiveness and reclaimed his place in her embrace, but instead had chosen him. Astarion had never had anyone choose him before. And despite his complicated feelings about physical intimacy, he was quite certain that there was nothing he wanted more than to fuck Gale so hard the wizard would forget the name Mystra ever crossed his mind.
And seeing as they were currently completely alone, with no one due to appear until the early hours of the morning, Astarion was going to take his time and worship Gale as he deserved.“Well then, my darling man.”
Astarion could feel himself grinning, and his hands, which had been innocently resting on Gale’s sides, began trailing lower.
“Now that this nasty orb business is resolved, how about we show Mystra who you really belong to?”

"Let's leave it at that for tonight." Gale's smiled faded. "I'm unsure how...it would be best for me to avoid any more excitement. And that was," Gale coughed, "supremely exciting."
He was lying, like always. About sex, for some reason. Gale's web of lies was meant to be a net, something Astarion could trap the wizard in if things ever turned sour between them. It wasn't meant to get in the way of an exquisitely planned seduction. This whole thing was supposed to get them back on an even playing field--Gale would get to pump his load into a corpse, and Astarion wouldn't have to worry about being turned over to any Gur on their tails.
But that only worked if Gale would actually fuck him.
Gale has performance anxiety. Astarion has a performance to put on.

The magus reached up with a hand, placing a gentle touch on Astarion’s cheek. For once, Astarion didn’t flinch away from the contact. He let Gale cup his cheek, let him run his calloused thumb along his cheekbone. “You know,” Gale started, “you and I are not so different.” He smiled, sliding his hand up to tangle his fingers loosely into Astarion’s silver curls.
Astarion closed his eyes. “We have our similarities,” he agreed softly. He let Gale massage his scalp with his blunt nails for a moment, taking the time to think.
He wasn’t taking advantage of Gale like he had planned to do with the first lay of the camp. He hadn’t even thought of it, hadn’t had those intentions from the beginning. He was truly showing the man what it was like to be touched, to be held, to be loved. It was like looking in a mirror, like showing himself it was okay, too.
Maybe he wouldn’t take advantage of Gale.

Summary
A remix of Act 2 in which Gale gets more of a character arc resolution.
“Gods damn it Gale!”
Astarion leaps over him. The guard, poised to land an entirely excessive final blow to Gale’s skull, topples backwards with a knife in his gut. The second pierces his neck, sending him crashing to the ground. Astarion yanks his blades back, and drops to his knees beside Gale.
“Oh no no no, you are not dying on me now.”
Gale attempts to express something, but it comes out as a gurgle of bloody bubbles. The world swings to the side, black and spinning.
“I swear, if it turns out I did just watch you spend the last of your magic sending your cat back to safety instead of saving your own damn skin-”
The threat remains unfinished. A healing potion trickles between Gale’s lips.
“Tressym,” Gale says, when he can finally trust his voice.
Astarion is still crouched over him, cheeks flushed, sweat running down his brow and someone else’s blood smeared across his cheek. Gale has the sudden urge to kiss him.
“What?”
“She’s a tressym. Not a cat.”
Astarion makes a noise of such furious, pained exasperation that Gale half expects the dagger to end up in his neck next.Series

Two months after the brain falls, Baldur's Gate has picked up most of the pieces. The heroes that saved Faerûn have been there through most of it, helping the city get back on its feet. But now it's time to move on. Old lives and families to return to. Gale is going back to his tower in Waterdeep, back to the quiet, back to being alone; or at least, that was the plan. But plans change.
This is a story about falling in love.
