Summary
The last probationary firefighter had barely lasted five weeks, the shifts instead surviving on transfers and temporary floaters cycling in and out, the house heavy with its own legacy of neglect.
“Island of misfit toys” Hen had called it on Bobby’s first day.
She hadn’t been wrong.
But in the fourteen months since Bobby arrived, they’ve been slowly laying down bricks, building a new foundation for the firehouse.
Or, a new probie arrives at the 118. This is how it comes together. This is how it falls apart.

Summary
“Oh no.” Athena peers out the windscreen, giving voice to the dread that’s been rising steadily since she arrived in Minnesota. “Oh no, no no no no.”
She’s been driving north from St Paul for three hours and the snow banks alongside the highway are only getting taller. Thirty miles have passed since the last town— a cluster of houses so small Athena drove in one side and straight out the other side before she even realised she was supposed to be in a town— and the GPS informing her that she’s nearly at her destination.
Not that she can see it yet, thick forest bracketing either side of the highway.
She’s starting to feel a whole lot less generous towards Maddie Buckley and this whole house swap idea.

Summary
Buck doesn’t come in.
Behind him, the Jeep is parked on the curb. Eddie can make out the shape of someone in the passenger seat. It takes him a moment to place the dark hair, straight instead of the curly way he’s used to seeing it. Maddie’s slumped against the window with a hand over her face, shading it from the harsh morning sun.
Eddie’s not oblivious, he knows something’s been going on with Maddie, just no details, Chim playing things close to his chest. But now, Buck’s whole posture screams on edge, hands shoved deep in his pockets and hunched as he half twists to look back at the car again— at Maddie— as though they both might disappear at any moment. The toes of his sneakers rubbing over one another. Buck still has the car keys in his hands.
“Buck.” The wave of gratitude Eddie had felt on seeing Buck has pulled back, replaced by another wave, freezing cold and raw salt against his skin. “What is this?”
OR. A 5A rewrite where Buck goes with Maddie when she leaves LA

Summary
Today was not supposed to go like this.
In fact, Eddie’s sure no day is supposed to go like this, but so far calls at the dispatch desk have exposed him to a wide variety of possible bad days. But they’re supposed to be other people’s bad days.
Not this call.
This call— Maria, John, their young son Kyle and a speeding car wired to explode— has become Eddie’s own personal hell.
Or: Relationships built under intense circumstances never last.

Summary
“Eddie?” Hen says.
Eddie pauses, his feet half shoved into his turnout boots. He looks up at Hen, she's already got her pants on, a good few steps ahead of him, but she's stopped, forehead scrunched and mouth pinched tight.
"What?"
"What are you doing here?" She asks.
Eddie stops. Confusion, that’s the expression on Hen’s face. Confusion, tinged with concern. Right. Because Eddie doesn’t work here anymore.
Eddie left the 118 two months ago, and he hasn’t been back since.
OR. Eddie's not doing well with the quiet.

Summary
They both throw themselves out of the bed at the same time, then hunch over it on a side each staring at the other.
“Rory?” Her own voice says but she’s not the one speaking, he is.
“Jess.” She growls in his voice, insanely angry instinctively, suddenly.Imagine being stuck in the body of your ex, imagine your ex being stuck in your body.

Summary
He pulls out his phone again.
“Chimney?”
It takes him a minute to answer, a minute to pull his eyes away from the screen and meet Maddie’s concerned gaze.
“What is it,” she asks.
He licks his lip. “It’s, uh, it’s my father. His assistant at least.” Maddie frowns and he continues. “He’s coming to LA. Apparently, that means sending a four-page email via his executive assistant. Not a phone call.”
Or, learning that his father is visiting, Chimney struggles.

Summary
Buck settles next to Eddie and glances out the window. He wants to fill the silence with chatter, with anything to distract himself, but can’t bring himself to. He has no idea what to say now. Maybe he isn’t supposed to know, isn’t supposed to have all the answers like notes on flashcards that he can just whip out if he gets stumped or something. It’s not like Eddie’s a test he’s going to be graded on. Maybe all that really matters is Eddie’s not alone right now.
Maybe Buck is just trying to make himself feel better about not knowing how to fix this. Not knowing how to fix Eddie.
Buck and Eddie, after. Plus a lil bedsharing.
