    In the aftermath of the Shibuya meteor strike, Niragi Suguru has nowhere to go. The hospital refuses to discharge him without an address, and Chishiya Shuntarō, who happens to be standing nearby, makes a very bad decision.

    It doesn't seem like one at the time.

    Sure, the bandage-swathed man standing before him seems like a short fuse ready to blow at just a whiff of smoke, but after surviving near death, Chishiya has been moving through life half-present, wading through days that barely register, and Niragi is the first thing in a long time to cut through Chishiya’s numbness.

    Set between Seasons 2 and 3 of Alice in Borderland, this is a slow, messy not-quite-enemies to not-quite-lovers story about two men who bring out the absolute worst in each other.

    (This began as a porn with some plot 2am brainwave fic but has now expanded into a canon-adjacent what if everyone sort of regained their memories narrative that somewhat merges with the events of season 3. It is still, at it's heart, a Niragi/Chishiya fic but if you watched season 3 and were, like me, heavily disappointed by the lack of Chishiya and other original characters, you might like this one)

    "The Major's my father," Stebbins spits out the words at the wheels of the half-track rumbling on in front of them with what little energy is left in his body. The red rim of his eyelids glimmer as he looks up at the Major. "I'm his bastard."

    Ray stares at him. The actual meaning of his words take some time to penetrate the coldness in his chest that's slowing all his thoughts, but when they do, he looks at the Major to see his reaction. When he sees that there is none, he looks back at Stebbins, and the awful, raw edges of his expression, and then back to the Major, hoping for Stebbins' sake, that the man at least fucking reacts. However, when he looks back at the Major, he is no longer there. Instead, a cavernous hole decides to open up beneath the half track with a roar not too dissimilar to that of the carbines, swallowing the entire vehicle whole.

    A moment later, a great watery crash rings out from miles below them.

    Billy tries turning to look them in the face, but it's a futile attempt, one so pathetic it makes him want to cry. McVries comes to his bedside, puts a fever-checking palm on his forehead. That touch does something to Billy, and he stops fussing.
    It's the most lucid he's felt in a while: there are memories in his head that are recent, not just inane childhood-hallucinations. He remembers the sabotage, the kind of insurrectionist action so loathed by his father. It happened not long after Arthur Baker's death. Then came the run-for-it, ride-for-it in the rebel car, the pain and the screaming and the careening out of the world.

    or: The last three Long Walkers are rescued by rebels before Stebbins has the opportunity to come clean about his family situation. Forced to lie low in an isolated cabin with his former competitors, he's grappling with old demons and questioning his loyalties.

    After Chishiya's (mis)calculated betrayal at the beach, the surviving five are forced to run from the King of Spades' machine gun fire. A confusing dream plagues Arisu. Chishiya learns about what it means to care. Meticulous strategy has the group split down the middle, and Arisu is left making sense of not only the Borderlands’ puzzles, but also Chishiya's sly smiles and strange looks. A few snide remarks and a couple close calls later, the pair set off to face the games ahead. This time, however, with the creators' special attention.

    Or: an unlikely second-chance alliance between a hearts-player with the best intentions, and a diamonds-player with the worst ones.
