“If seal spirits happen to also need their pelts to transform,” Shang Qinghua sniffs, “Then that’s simply a coincidence.”

Scare them off with how super-queer they are?” Wei Ying’s tone is light, but he can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment., He’d gotten his hopes up too quickly — what did he think? That a guy like this would want a relationship with him? He mentally runs through his Grindr pics and cringes internally. He was picked because of his weird gay undercut and crop top and embarrasing tattoos. You don’t go looking for relationships on Grindr, Wei Ying reminds himself irritably.

It was only when they arrived at the airport to meet a group of his coworkers and Wei Ying told them cheerfully, "Hey everyone, meet Lan Zhan!", only when — luckily! — Lan Zhan went to the weigh-scales to once again weigh their baggage because he was just like that, only when Gina said, "Oh, how romantic!" that Wei Ying realized that he was, in fact, a little bit screwed.
Because only then had he remembered that maybe he’d told his coworkers at several office parties that Lan Zhan was the love of his life.

Lan Zhan gave his husband a mild warning glance. “Wei Ying.”
“Right, right,” Wei Ying said, raising both hands. “Serious talk. Continue, young man.”
A-Yuan exhaled shakily. “When we were learning about… how babies are made… my classmates were all talking…”
Wei Ying could see it now—the nervous twitching of A-Yuan’s fingers, the way his voice trembled slightly.
“And then,” A-Yuan said, words rushing out, “someone asked me… if I’m adopted.”
The room went still.
Or, A-Yuan knows now.

Wei Wuxian hadn’t been avoiding Lan Wangji for years, but he hadn’t been not-avoiding Lan Wangji either. There was something awful and awkward about seeing your intended spouse after turning them down that Wei Wuxian just didn’t want to deal with. It helped that he went away for university, and that Lan Wangji went away for university, and they happened to both go to different countries. Wei Wuxian liked to think they both wanted to get as far away from the situation as possible.

So why, then, does Wei Wuxian’s heart skip a beat every time he sees Lan Wangji? And why is adult Lan Wangji so hot? It’s not fair that they could be married and instead Wei Wuxian is awkwardly pining for his former betrothed, a boy he once publicly broke it off with without regret.

The Blood Bank was a way for him to make money faster, beyond his usual teaching job, to help his mother. He tried not to think too much about the fact that there were random faceless vampires feasting on his blood.
Frowning to himself, Lan Zhan clicks the message.
"You have been selected as a special provider for a very prestigious client! The Yiling Laozu has chosen you to be a part of his regular collaborators!"
Lan Zhan raises an eyebrow when he sees the name.
Very few vampires are known amongst humans, because they keep well hidden, but Yiling Laozu is one of the most well-known ones.

Lan Zhan doesn’t think about him anymore.
The days when he would obsess over every tiny work Wei Ying appeared in are long gone. His days of buying every magazine he was in, of taping his interviews and watching them over and over again just to get a piece of the real him, they’re all over. Lan Zhan doesn’t follow every project Wei Ying is a part of anymore, doesn’t try to find out if Wei Ying ever mentioned him anywhere, and doesn’t keep the TV on just in case he hears Wei Ying’s voice in a new commercial.
He has weeks, and even months, when Wei Ying doesn’t even cross his mind at all. And when he does, it is only with a faded kind of fondness, a simmering affection to the memories they shared together.
He’s happy for the things Wei Ying achieved. There is almost no hurt at all, almost no pain. And almost must be just as good as none.

“You are going home,” Yanli reaches over and tucks his hair behind his ear, giving him a tiny smile. “Don’t worry. Just a few more scans, and then Lan Zhan can take you back."
“Who’s Lan Zhan?” he asks.
The pretty man by his side inhales so sharply Wei Ying feels the air get sucked out of the room.

Wei Ying never wanted it to end. But after growing tired of his online friend's refusal to meet in person, Wei Ying finally cuts him out of his life and begins to navigate the real world on his own.
Fate won't allow them to lead separate lives, though, and encounter after encounter tangles them together. When Wei Ying discovers the true identity of Lan Wangji, the man who's interference in his life has caused so much distress, he sets out to learn the truth behind what happened between them and finds that the pain he felt suffered was only half the story.

He looked at Wei Wuxian with dry humor now instead of fury. He referred to Wei Wuxian as intelligent instead of a helpless troublemaker. Wei Wuxian, undeniably both of those things, was astonished by the turn in personality in those early days, but he has long grown accustomed to calling Lan Wangji one of his best friends.
Which is precisely why he’s struck dumb when Lan Zhan walks into the restaurant—and meets Wei Wuxian’s eyes with surprise of his own.
Wei Wuxian, holding his jacket in his hands and feeling far too poor for this place, says, “Oh. Hey.”
