Mara Jade is the Emperor's Hand, chosen as a small child to help her master with his benevolent work for the Galaxy. She doesn't have time for insignificant ensigns. And she certainly doesn't fall in love with them. Least of all kriffing pilots.
Luke Lars is a pilot for the Imperial Navy. He left his uncle's farm at seventeen with stars in his eyes and enough confidence to get himself killed. The galaxy has plenty of wonders. He wasn't expecting a red-haired dancer from the Imperial Palace to be one of them.
