Summary
Being the least favored concubine of the Emperor’s harem really wasn’t as bad as everyone makes it seem.
No eunuchs came by his palace with white silk, or told him to pack up and return home, so Wei Ying didn’t see the problem. Sure, the more favored concubines got bigger palaces and more freedom than he did, but he ate from the same kitchens they did, walked the same beautiful gardens they did, and the time he would have wasted trying to catch the Emperor’s attention, he could spend towards his cultivation!
And to top it all off, Wei Ying thought, he certainly got more sleep than his exalted elder sisters!
Before he could even finish this thought, there was a loud pounding reverberating through his palace garden, and Wei Ying fell to the ground with an undignified wheeze. He heard the doors to his palace open, and the sound of pounding feet filled the courtyard.

A large black dog bounds into the clearing, then skids to a stop. It stares at Wei Wuxian, body stiff, tail raised.
A low growl rumbles in its throat.
And Wei Wuxian goes utterly still.
It had been a point of contention between him and Jiang Cheng when they were children. Jiang Cheng had thought he saw no difference between a happy dog with a wagging tail and lolling tongue, and one with aggression in its body.
But Wei Wuxian knew—knows the difference. He knows because a happy dog is one he can run away from, duck behind Jiang Cheng, scramble up a tree and wail for rescue. A snarling dog is something that leaves him frozen.

Wei Wuxian gets locked out of the Cloud Recesses due to a broken rule and a certain stubborn Lan. Neither could have predicted what would come next.
