    Shane doesn’t know why he still feels so off-kilter. He should be the happiest he’s ever been—he won the Cup, he feels like he’s maybe starting to have a few friends on his team, and he’s finally starting to believe his parents when they tell him he won’t get traded again. He should be on top of the world, but sometimes he still feels like the lone defender on an odd-man rush, skating as fast as he can to prevent what feels like an inevitable outcome.

    The problem is that he’s not quite sure which outcome it is that he’s trying to stop.

    And as his RA, his mentor and guide in the first year of Shane's college career, he was meant to correct that. Steer his charge clear of such horrible, terrible ideas as asking their “straight” RA to teach them how to kiss behind their boyfriend's back. Say no, malysh, you really don't need to worry about this, your first kiss should be with someone you love and trust and really want to kiss.

    “Okay,” he said, instead, and thought that at least he wasn't going to be sent back to Russia.

    He was going to be sent straight to hell.

    Their eyes lock, and for a moment the only sound in the room is their panting. The moment feels heavy, stretched thin, like both of them are waiting for it to snap.

    It’s not too hard - probably not even enough to leave a mark - but the sting of it is the spark that lights the flame. Ilya’s eyes roll back inside his head. His mouth drops open in a silent gasp as ecstasy rolls through his body like a forest fire, scorching every one of his nerve endings with white-hot desire.

    It’s like the ground drops out from beneath Ilya, and his heart falls from his chest. It tumbles past rock bottom, down to the cavern that shattered open inside of him on that night five years ago. The night when Ilya walked away from Hollander for the last time.

    He can’t breathe.

    (Or: Shane doesn’t get hurt, they break up, and they don’t talk for five long years. Until Shane is traded to Ottawa.)
