In screenwriting, there’s a concept called A/B/C stories which refers to the different narrative and story threads in a TV show. The “A Story” is the primary focus of the story, meaning it will usually be about the lead and have the most amount of scenes. The “B story” is generally a parallel storyline headed by more secondary characters. It isn't the main focus of the show and is viewed as less important than the A Story.
Youichi spends a bit too much time treating himself like a secondary character in someone else’s story that he almost misses out on his own.

Flynn opens his mouth, and then shuts it. “That’s none of my business.”
She looks at him properly. Her ears twitch like Repede’s do when he’s interested, eyes wide and unblinking. “I was under the impression you two had something going on.”
Flynn swallows. “Well. I, uh. We are close, I suppose. We’re just, not, you know.”
“Well,” says Judith beatifically. Her smile is slow and doesn’t reach her eyes. Flynn fights back the urge to reach for his sword as she steps away from the wall. “Well. How silly of me to make such assumptions.”
“I,” Flynn says stupidly. She’s already gone. Her skirt swishes around her knees as she sashays off. Flynn, for reasons he cannot yet discern, is filled with a sense of foreboding. “I think I’m in trouble.”

“Really?” Miyuki hums. “And who’s this so very experienced Sawamura Eijun we’re talking about? The one who came from some backwater town with little to no experience under his belt, or the one who wrote that very fine piece about the new jogging path? Very cute dogs, by the way.”
Eijun swallows thickly, brows furrowed.
Miyuki chuckles. “Sorry, sorry. Bad joke.”
He grinds his teeth.
“I’m better than what they have me doing,” he says, determined. “I just need my opening.”
It’s quiet in the car. Miyuki turns to him, giving him a quick, contemplative glance before returning back to face the window once more.
“Then you better get to it, Sawamura Eijun.”

Typically when you're bringing your sick dog to the vet, you don't usually find love while you're sitting in the waiting room. But Matt takes one look at Dr. Shirogane, and immediately he's head over heels. Even though he's sure it's just a crush, he finds himself going out of his way to find excuses to see the vet again.
But there's only so many times you can go to the vet in a short period of time without it looking suspicious or racking up a huge bill, so Matt (with a little help from his sister Katie) finds an alternative way to spend as much time with his crush as possible. And if it comes with the bonus of hanging out with adorable animals, he's definitely not going to complain.
