It’s Valentine’s Day and everyone expects Mike to take out his super pretty girlfriend — to buy her flowers and gifts. Apparently everyone around him got that memo but Mike Wheeler himself.
Girls are high maintenance, his father keeps telling him and he’s sick of that phrase.
Because Will isn’t.To care for Will is rather easy, to buy him a meaningful flower bouquet is thrilling and to pick out his favorite chocolate is like second nature.
Mike simply doesn’t understand why nobody else in the world gets that.
or: basically Mike being an oblivious idiot that gives Will the full boyfriend-treatment without noticing it.

Summary
Will Byers had been lonely for a while now, feeling so out of place even when he was surrounded by all his friends - his party. There was a time when being around these people would have felt overwhelming, but in a good way. There was a time when being around Mike Wheeler, just being in the same room as him, would have been utter bliss and comfort.
That felt like a lifetime ago now.

“You can’t have him,” Mike hissed, his nails digging into Will’s skin as he clung even tighter. It was like Mike was trying to absorb him. “I won’t lose him again. Never. Again.”
“We won’t take him from you. I promise. But you are hurting him Mike. You don’t want to hurt Will, do you Mike? You never want to hurt Will, you want to protect him.”
Mike snarled at Nancy, “Never! I would never!”

Or: Will is feeling lost and alone while with friends until he has a strange feeling that leads him to meeting a Mike Wheeler that isn’t his. A Mike Wheeler that may reciprocate all those deeply buried feelings that are drowning Will. In this new Mike, Will may finally find the happiness that he has been denying himself.

Will has never thought his and Mike's, admittedly, unique friendship was a bad thing, not until a debate between the party about Mike's inclination towards him has him second guessing the entirety of their friendship. With evidence that Mike has been neglecting his sister in favor of doting on his every need, Will makes it his mission to fix the relationship between Mike and El by stepping aside and no longer accepting the care Mike tries to give him, encouraging him to pay attention to El instead.
Mike is, decidedly, not a fan.

Summary
Will has never been a huge fan of Valentine’s Day. It just seemed like a cruel reminder of what he could never have: romance.
Boys like Will didn’t get to hold hands on the streets, didn’t get to kiss in crosswalks. They didn’t get to go out for dinner dates and hold hands across the table, or gaze longingly into each other’s eyes.
The whole holiday just felt like a taunt, reminding him how painfully different he was.
That is until Mike decides to give him a necklace with an M engraved on it for Valentine’s Day, and promptly redefines the whole holiday.
